Evacuated tubes, the right choice for harsh winter climates
An evacuated tube collector is made of multiple glass tubes (kind of like long thermoses) that absorb solar energy. Each tube has a vacuum (an evacuated space) between two layers of glass, which greatly reduces heat loss.
- Sunlight hits the tube → an inner coating absorbs it and turns it into heat
- Heat transfers to a fluid (like water or a heat transfer liquid) inside a pipe that runs through or alongside the tubes
- Vacuum insulationprevents heat from escaping into the air → so even in winter or on cloudy days, they stay efficient.
